Chapter Seventeen
THE SCHOOL OF THE PROPHETS
Information for the organization of the School of the
Prophets came as early as 1832 but the actual organization
evidently didn't take place until 1835:
Diaries, Page 36 (Monday, 5th Oct. 1835) "Also attend this
fall the Solemn Assembly of the first Elders for
organization of the School of the Prophets and attend to
the ordinence of the washing of feet and TO
PREPARE THEIR HEARTS IN ALL HUMILITY FOR AN ENDOWMENT WITH
POWER FROM ON HIGH. To which they all agreed with one accord
and seamed to be greatly rejoiced."
D & C 90:7 "As also through your administration the keys
of the school of the prophets, which I have
commanded to be organized;
8 THAT THEREBY THEY MAY BE PERFECTED IN THEIR
MINISTRY FOR THE SALVATION OF ZION, AND OF THE NATIONS OF
ISRAEL. AND OF THE GENIlLES, AS MANY AS WILL
BELIEVE;
9 That through your administration they may receive the
word, and through their administration the word may go forth
unto the ends of the earth, unto the Gentiles first, and
then, behold, and lo, they shall turn unto the Jews.
10 And then cometh the day when the arm of the Lord shall be
revealed in power in convincing the nations, the heathen
nations, the house of Joseph, of the gospel of their
salvation.
11 For it shall come to pass in that day, that every man
shall hear the fulness of the gospel in his own tongue, and
in his own language, through those who are ordained unto
this power, by the administration of the Comforter, shed
forth upon them for the revelation of Jesus Christ.
...................
15 .... STUDY AND LEARN, AND BECOME ACQUAITED WITH
ALL GOOD BOOKS, AND WITH LANGUAGES. TONGUES, AND
PEOPLE .
16 And this shall be your business and mission IN ALL YOUR
LIVES, to preside in council, and set in order all the
affairs of this church and kingdom.
17 Be not ashamed, nither confounded; but be admonished in
all your high-mindedness and pride, for it bringeth a snare
upon your souls.
18 Set in order your houses; keep slothfulness and
uncleanness far from you."
The foregoing Bolded in Verse 8 informed them that through
this School of The Prophets they were to be perfected in
their calling to go forth into the world to preach
salvation. The ordinance of the "washing of feet" was
introduced and in the following scripture the Savior
explains that this ordinance was necessary to teach
humility. (See Verse 16)
RB, St. John 13:3 "Jesus knowing that the Father had given
all things into his hands, and that he was come from God,
and went to God;
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and
took a towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and he began to
wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel
wherewith he was girded.
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him,
Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest
not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
8 Peter saith unto him, Thou neetlest not to wash my feet.
Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part
with me.
....................
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his
garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye
what I have done to you?
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I
am.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet;
ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I
have done to you.
16 Verily, verily I say unto you, THE SERVANT IS NOT
GREATER THAN HIS LORD; NEITHER HE THAT IS SENT GREATER THAN
HE THAT SENT HIM .
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them."
